CASES Portfolio Supervision Programme: Q&A with supervisor Michael King

What is the CASES Portfolio Supervision Programme and who is it designed for?
The programme is designed for practitioners completing the CASES Supervised Experience Pathway and working towards CASES accreditation. It supports candidates across all CASES disciplines, including physiology, biomechanics and sport science, providing guidance throughout the accreditation process.
Why do practitioners choose to work with a supervisor during their CASES journey?
A CASES-accredited supervisor is a requirement of the pathway, but our programme goes beyond that. We provide a more holistic development experience, offering not only one-to-one supervision but also access to a wider professional network of experienced practitioners and industry contacts who can help candidates develop their skills and experience.
What support do supervisees receive throughout the programme?
Supervisees benefit from a combination of individual mentoring, group support sessions and seminars delivered by experienced professionals working within the industry.
How often do you meet with supervisees, and what does a typical session involve?
Candidates take part in a monthly one-to-one meeting and a monthly group session. Individual meetings focus on discussing portfolio progress, addressing challenges and providing tailored guidance. Group sessions encourage shared learning, networking and discussions with industry professionals who can offer valuable insights into careers within sport science and performance support.
What are the most common challenges practitioners face when completing their portfolio?
For most candidates, the biggest challenge is finding the time to balance portfolio requirements alongside applied practice and other professional commitments. As the pathway can be completed over a period of two to six years, maintaining momentum and consistency throughout the process can also be difficult.
What advice would you give to someone considering starting the CASES Supervised Experience Pathway?
Plan carefully from the outset and make portfolio work a regular part of your routine. Setting aside dedicated time each week or month helps you keep on top of the requirements and makes reflective practice much easier. Rather than leaving work until later and trying to document it retrospectively, it’s far more effective to update your portfolio consistently as you progress.
What makes your approach to supervision different?
Our approach combines personalised one-to-one support with the benefits of collaborative group learning. Candidates not only gain guidance from their supervisor but also learn from peers who are at similar stages of their careers. We also bring experienced practitioners and industry experts into regular group sessions, giving candidates direct access to professionals working in roles they may aspire to. Combined with structured, ongoing check-ins, this creates accountability, expands professional networks and helps candidates stay on track throughout the accreditation journey.
